(Tab 2) Then & Now: The alley
Here is an interesting tidbit! Who knew that the alley behind our house had a name!?? I certainly didn’t. I spoke to Ted and he didn’t know it either. In fact, he and I and probably any of us who gave it a thought, just assumed that the homes that faced the park had East Blvd addresses… Makes sense?
NOT!!! They all have alley addresses or more accurately they are “98th Place” addresses! How about that… Now you know! See the map.
(Tab 3) Then & Now: Derick I. Dawkins & Four Chaplains
The picture of Derick I. Dawkins in front of the monument circa 1971. Note the bronze placard is removed. Many of the monuments were damaged or stolen. Park attendants removed remaining vulnerable artifacts for safekeeping.
It wouldn’t be until 30 or more years past that this monument and others were restored. We certainly did not revere and certainly did quite a bit of damage to the Cultural Gardens in our youthful ignorance. I know I am not proud of many aspects of my childhood… Wish I could fix it.

This yard, the garage, along with back stair and storage room and yard were is the location at the rear of our home where it all began.
(Tab 7) Alley View September 1971 (Lamont, Fluff & Michael)
Alley facing south. Standing near Jimmy Thompson’s Garage. Michael, Lamont, and Fluff. Likely NOT Easter based Sep 1971 date stamp… Possibly the beginning of school?
(Tab 8) A Side View of Front Stairs 1152 (Karen and Ted)
Karen and Ted. Can you see whose on the porch? Likely another Easter.
(Tab 9) 1152 Living Room View of Staircase, “Fluff” (Jackie)
Jackie “Fluff” In the living room. No matter how hard mom worked to keep her living room clean… It always fell by our hands. I remember many attempts to keep us out of the this room. Gates, chains, locked doors, fixing up the basement, etc. We were persistent.

(Tab 12) Uncle Paul Thompson on The Porch
Uncle Paul on the front porch. This one of the very few times that he ever came to our home, we saw him… maybe twice as many times.
I recall that he was in to tropical fish and that he kept several aquariums. In the early years… possibly the late 60’s, we received several aquariums and parts from Uncle Paul. With all of that came at 1 piranha. Dad kept would feed it hamburger and maintain the water temperature low to make the fish less dangerous through reduced metabolism.
I have never considered it but Uncle Pauls interest may have been the inifluence that has had influence on all of the Pickett kids (except Ted) to have a life-longe interest in the aquarium hobby.
